Accelerated Reader ~ (AR)
Each student has been assigned an "AR Goal." The goals were calculated according to each student's performance on the computerized AR star test.  The Accelerated Reader program ("AR") is a computerized program that tests reading comprehension. Students select books on their reading level, read independently, and take an independent comprehension test on a school computer. Each book is worth a certain number of points based on its length and reading level. Students get a percentage of these points based on how many of the test questions they get right. The program tracks their progress over the course of the school year. You may track your student’s progress in Home Connect.
Here is a link to the Parent's Guide to AR. Accelerated Reader
Hopefully, this will answer your questions.

PVUSD requires teachers set AR goals for students starting in 3rd grade.
The goal dates are as follows:
 Sept. 29 to Nov. 7
 Nov. 11 to Dec. 19
 Jan. 12 to Feb. 20
 Feb. 23 to April 2
 April 13 to May 29

September 22-26th

Thank you to all who attended Back to School Night. It was great to see you again and discuss an overview of the year. Please feel free to call or email if you would like to discuss more.

Rainbow Roll-N-WriteIn spelling homework this week is back to the traditional spelling list. Here are a few suggestions for studying the weekly words:
-Write the words in cursive.
-Rainbow roll-n-write the words.
-Write each word 3-5 times each.
-Write the words in a sentence.
-Draw a picture with each word.
A strong foundation in phonics helps with decoding more difficult words.

In Math, we're continuing with the second half of our module on multiplication and division. We will continue using the terms Labeled Tape Diagram, Array, Number Bond and Equation. This helps students develop a deeper understanding of multiplication and division.

As we continue reading Charlotte's Web, the students will re-tell the story to their buddies and will conclude the story with a Wilbur mosaic.

Finally, we will begin working on a personal narrative about our trip to the fair. Thank you to the parents who sent in many pictures from the field trip. This will help in the brainstorming part of the writing process.
Thank you Jennifer Ford for this captivating picture from the pig races.

Please see the top tab "Upcoming Projects" for information on the Landform project that is due Oct. 10th.

FINANCIAL UPDATE:
The Parent Alliance has approved a budget of $101,000 in school support this year! All the fundraisers directly benefit our students and teachers.

Classroom Fund Accounts – There are donation envelopes available in the office. Classroom donations are spent directly by your student’s teacher to make important purchases that support learning.  Please consider making a donation to your child’s classroom.

Matching Gifts – Does your employer have a matching gifts program? If so, please consider requesting a matching gift for any donation you make to Rio.  This is “free” money for the school and doubles your investment in your child(ren)’s education.

SCHOOL UPDATE:
Volunteers are needed to help organize games and activities at recess time, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Pick one day a week or month to play with kids during recess!  Contact Deb Dorney if interested.

The new visual and performing arts teacher, "Ms. D", frees up $15,000 Parent Alliance funds budgeted for Arts & Choir.  Mrs. Dorney will work with the teacher leadership team to make suggestions on how to use those funds and will present their ideas at a future PA meeting.

Positive Discipline classes will be offered again this year, starting in October.  Dates to be announced soon.  A common core night will also be held to help parents understand math at each grade level and share resources.  Date to be announced.
